Tooth Sensitivity in Jacksonville

Do you ever experience a sudden shooting pain in your teeth when eating ice cream or drinking hot beverages? If so, you're not alone—many people suffer from tooth sensitivity at some point in their lives. At our dental office, we have a range of solutions to manage or resolve this unpleasant issue. Our experienced team can provide tailored advice and treatment plans based on your individual needs. Don't hesitate to reach out if you'd like more information.

What’s Tooth Sensitivity?

If you're experiencing sudden tooth pain or sensitivity when eating or drinking, you might be dealing with sensitive teeth. Each tooth is made up of several components, including the crown, which is the visible part of your tooth, and the root, which keeps your tooth in place. Your tooth enamel is the hard, white layer that protects the sensitive inner parts of each tooth. If your enamel starts to wear away or erode, your tooth's dentin is exposed, which can lead to pain or discomfort.

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

Various factors can contribute to the problem of sensitive teeth. Brushing too hard or grinding your teeth can wear down the protective enamel, exposing the sensitive dentin layer. Additionally, eating acidic foods, drinking acidic beverages, or getting too many teeth whitening treatments can also contribute to sensitivity. Recessed gums from age or gum disease can also play a part. Teeth with cavities and chipped or broken teeth also can be susceptible. If you're experiencing discomfort while eating or drinking, be sure to discuss it with your dentist so you can rule out serious causes and get relief as soon as possible.

Treatment Options for Sensitive Teeth

If you're experiencing dental pain, a variety of options are available to you. Your dentist might recommend desensitizing toothpaste, which can be very effective with regular use, typically taking a few weeks for you to experience the full benefit. Alternatively, fluoride treatments can be applied to your teeth to help strengthen tooth enamel and reduce sensitivity. In some cases, the use of bonding agents to cover sensitive root surfaces, or even a gum graft, might be the best course of action. In rare instances where other treatments are ineffective, a root canal may be necessary. Root canals, while considered a last resort, have a high success rate in treating persistent tooth sensitivity. Some other options your dentist might discuss with you are crowns, fillings, sealants, and inlays.

Whatever your specific needs might be, your dentist will work with you to find the best option to alleviate your pain and protect your teeth.

What Steps Can Prevent Tooth Sensitivity?

Protecting your dental enamel starts with the basics of twice-daily brushing and once-daily flossing. To avoid making your teeth more sensitive, be gentle when brushing your teeth. Rough brushing can make the problem worse by pushing up your gums and exposing the sensitive roots. So, use a soft-bristled brush with the ADA-accepted seal of approval, and brush twice a day in a gentle up-and-down motion. Think of it more as a tooth-and-gum massage instead of a scrubbing session. As long as you brush twice a day for two minutes each time, you'll sufficiently remove plaque.

You might also try using a desensitizing toothpaste, which contains a compound that helps block the transmission of sensation from the tooth to the nerve. Another way to protect your teeth is using fluoride mouthwash to strengthen your enamel layer. Remember, highly acidic foods and drinks can wear away and soften your enamel, so wait at least 30 minutes after consuming acidic foods to brush your teeth. Try to limit acidic beverages to mealtimes only so that they aren't in contact with your teeth all throughout the day. Finally, if you grind your teeth, talk to your dentist about being fitted for a mouthguard to wear while you sleep to protect your teeth. Taking these steps can help you keep your teeth healthy and pain-free.
